Alphabet raises 2026 CapEx guidance to $205B amid AI infrastructure crunch—stock falls despite cloud beat

Alphabet raised its 2026 capital expenditure guidance to $195–205 billion (up from $180–190B), signaling accelerated AI infrastructure buildout while also announcing further increases coming in 2027. Google CFO Anat Ashkenazi cited supply constraints and stronger-than-expected customer demand rather than demand uncertainty as the driver. Despite reporting Q2 cloud revenue of $24.8 billion (up 82% YoY) and a $514 billion backlog of contracted work (up $50B in one quarter), Alphabet shares fell 7% in after-hours trading—a rare pullback despite beating expectations, suggesting Wall Street's concern over capital efficiency now outweighs top-line growth.

The breakdown: roughly 60% of capex goes to servers and 40% to data centers and networking. Alphabet financed part of this in June with an $84.75 billion equity raise specifically earmarked for AI infrastructure. Collectively, AI-related capex across Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta is projected to land between $600–725 billion in 2026, with industry estimates putting 2027 spending above $1 trillion. Google Cloud's 82% growth and $514B backlog, with over half expected to recognize as revenue within 24 months, provide some evidence that these investments are converting into profitable revenue—but the sheer capital intensity and execution risk are now pricing into the stock.

For infrastructure architects and platform teams, the sustained capex escalation signals two things: (1) enterprise AI adoption is real and demand exceeds available capacity, and (2) the AI infrastructure stack remains constrained by server, memory, and cooling bottlenecks. Hyperscalers have moved from speculative buildout into committed capital-allocation mode, which typically persists until utilization drops or monetization stumbles. Watch Q3 2026 for whether the backlog conversion rate holds and free cash flow returns positive—those metrics, not the headline capex figure, will determine whether this is disciplined or excessive.
