Amazon probes engineers who testified against AI data-center expansion at Seattle council

Amazon is investigating three employees who testified at Seattle City Council meetings advocating for a data-center moratorium and calling for stronger regulation of AI infrastructure capex. The employees, part of Amazon Employees for Climate Justice, criticized the tech industry's "all-costs-justified AI build out." Following the hearings, workers were called into HR meetings and informed investigations could result in disciplinary action, including potential termination, according to a complaint filed with the Seattle Office for Civil Rights.

The complaint accuses Amazon of violating a Seattle ordinance prohibiting companies from retaliating against employees for political ideology or activism. Amazon says it was investigating whether employees spoke "in their capacity as Amazonians" without following procedures, and disputes claims of threatened termination. The agency is still determining whether policy violations occurred. Amazon committed $200 billion in capex this year, mostly for AI infrastructure.

For practitioners, the incident signals internal organizational strain within Big Tech over AI's energy footprint and cost trajectory. Gallup found 70% of Americans oppose AI data-center construction locally. The probe, even if inconclusive, illustrates how capex decisions and labor relations are increasingly entangled around infrastructure scaling.
