AMD invests $5B in Anthropic, secures 2 GW MI455X deployment in Helios racks

AMD announced a strategic partnership with Anthropic on July 22, committing up to $5 billion in equity investment in exchange for a 2-gigawatt commitment to deploy AMD Instinct MI450 Series GPUs (specifically the MI455X) in AMD's Helios rack-scale systems. Anthropic's first gigawatt of compute is scheduled to begin deployment in the first half of 2027, with systems pairing MI455X GPUs alongside EPYC 'Venice' CPUs, Pensando networking, and ROCm software—a complete integrated stack tailored for AI training and inference.

The MI455X represents AMD's latest datacenter accelerator, built using advanced chiplet packaging with TSMC 2N gate-all-around transistors on the compute dies. AMD claims peak performance that rivals or exceeds Nvidia's Rubin GPU, though real-world software optimization remains a challenge. The Helios racks pack 72 GPUs per unit with 31 TB of HBM4 memory, delivering up to 2.9 exaFLOPS of FP4 inference compute—AMD's first direct rival to Nvidia's NVL72 rack-scale design.

The deal also includes a multi-year engineering collaboration where Anthropic will use Claude to optimize workloads for AMD Instinct GPUs and accelerate ROCm development, while AMD adopts Claude internally. This is AMD's second major Helios customer announcement in a week, following Microsoft's commitment to deploy on Azure. For architects, the deal signals AMD's aggressive capital commitment to penetrate a market where Nvidia commands ~95% of the datacenter GPU share; AMD's willingness to co-invest billions alongside customer capex spending reflects confidence in competitive parity on silicon.
