AMD invests up to $5B in Anthropic; Claude will deploy 2GW of Instinct MI450 GPUs via Helios

AMD announced a strategic partnership with Anthropic on July 22, committing up to $5 billion in equity investment while Anthropic deploys up to 2 gigawatts of AMD's Instinct MI450 Series GPUs in AMD's Helios rack-scale systems. The first gigawatt is scheduled to come online in the first half of 2027, with the multi-year engineering collaboration using Claude to optimize AMD's ROCm software stack and accelerate GPU workload optimization.

The infrastructure agreement pairs MI455X GPUs with AMD EPYC "Venice" CPUs, Pensando networking, and ROCm software inside Helios racks—each housing 72 accelerators, 31 TB of HBM4, and delivering up to 2.9 FP4 exaFLOPS of inference compute. This is AMD's second major Helios win within days after Microsoft's Azure commitment announced July 20, and follows earlier 6GW agreements with OpenAI and Meta.

Notably, the Anthropic deal includes no equity warrant provisions, unlike AMD's OpenAI agreement (160M warrants vesting through 2030). Barclays analyst interpretation: a supply-constrained market no longer requires equity sweeteners. The deal brings AMD's total announced AI compute commitments to roughly 14GW across Anthropic, Meta, and OpenAI.

For infrastructure planners, this signals Anthropic's diversified compute strategy across Nvidia, Google TPUs, Amazon Trainium, and now AMD at gigawatt scale. For AMD, ROCm software optimization through Claude deployment is the strategic play: overcoming CUDA's ecosystem moat remains harder than winning silicon orders.
