AMD secures 2GW Anthropic deal, invests $5B in Claude maker to rival Nvidia in AI chips

AMD announced a strategic partnership with Anthropic on July 22, committing up to $5 billion in equity and supplying up to 2 gigawatts of its new Instinct MI455X GPUs in Helios rack-scale systems. Anthropic will deploy the first gigawatt of capacity in the first half of 2027, making this AMD's second major customer win this week after Microsoft committed to deploying Helios on Azure for AI inference. The deal pairs the MI455X with AMD's EPYC Venice CPUs, Pensando networking, and ROCm software in an integrated rack platform.

AMD Helios racks are priced at $5 million to $5.5 million each and pack 72 MI455X accelerators with 31 TB of HBM4 memory, delivering up to 2.9 FP4 exaFLOPS of inference capacity. The MI455X itself features 320 billion transistors, uses TSMC's 2nm gate-all-around process on compute dies, and offers theoretically 2–4x peak FLOPS on low-precision formats compared to the prior MI355X, though real-world performance gains remain to be proven in production workloads.

Beyond capacity, AMD and Anthropic are launching a multi-year engineering collaboration to use Claude itself to optimize workloads for Instinct GPUs and accelerate ROCm software development—a direct counter to Nvidia's proprietary CUDA ecosystem that has locked in developer mindshare for decades. This partnership matters to architects because it signals the first serious attempt to break Nvidia's 95% data-center GPU market dominance through a combination of competitive hardware, rack-scale integration, and direct language-model-powered software optimization.
