Anthropic in talks with Samsung for custom AI chip on 2nm foundry process
Anthropic is in early talks with Samsung Electronics to be a manufacturing partner for custom AI chips, according to Bloomberg reporting on The Information. The discussions remain in early stages, with Anthropic still defining the chip's functions, performance targets, and infrastructure role. Samsung Foundry's 2nm process and advanced packaging capabilities are being considered, with both parties exploring how custom silicon fits into Anthropic's broader AI data center strategy.
The partnership aligns with Anthropic's existing relationship with Samsung: during its Series H funding round in May 2026, Anthropic named Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, and Micron as 'strategic infrastructure partners.' Anthropic is reportedly planning AI data centers with 1GW total capacity and ~$50B investment, of which approximately half goes to hardware including custom AI chips (ASICs), DRAM, and NAND flash. Samsung is uniquely positioned as the only one of the three memory suppliers with a foundry business capable of manufacturing advanced logic chips.
Anthropic's custom chip efforts follow similar moves by OpenAI (Jalapeño chip with Broadcom), Google (Tensor Processing Units), Meta (MTIA accelerators), and Amazon (Trainium chips). Anthropic has already hired Clive Chan, who previously led OpenAI's custom chip program, signaling serious commitment. However, Anthropic told Bloomberg that Amazon Trainium chips, Google TPUs, and NVIDIA GPUs will remain foundational to its computing strategy; custom chips represent diversification, not replacement.
For infrastructure architects evaluating AI-native compute strategies, the Anthropic-Samsung discussions signal a strategic inflection: frontier AI labs are moving from pure software play to vertically-integrated semiconductor design. Samsung's 2nm capacity (reportedly improving to ~21k wafers/month by end-2026, 163% growth from 8k in 2024) remains below TSMC's ~100k/month, but offers Anthropic an alternative to TSMC's crowded roadmap and tight capacity allocation. Success here would validate Samsung Foundry's bid to capture custom AI chip design wins beyond smartphone SoCs.
