Anthropic ships Claude Opus 5 at $5/$25 per Mtok—near-Fable-5 coding at half Fable's price

Anthropic released Claude Opus 5 on July 24, 2026, pricing it at $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens—identical to Opus 4.8 and half of Fable 5's $10/$50 rate. The model reaches near-frontier intelligence on coding and knowledge-work tasks while maintaining Opus-tier cost, making it the new default on Claude Max and the strongest model on Claude Pro. The company's framing: 'comes close to the frontier intelligence of Fable 5 at half the price, designed to be used every day.'

On benchmarks, Opus 5 achieves state-of-the-art on coding tasks. It more than doubles Opus 4.8's score on Frontier-Bench v0.1 at lower cost per completed task, and on CursorBench 3.2 it lands within 0.5% of Fable 5's peak score at half the cost per task. Independent testing from Artificial Analysis ranked Opus 5 number one on both its Intelligence Index (61) and Agentic Index (55.3) on launch day, ahead of Fable 5 and GPT-5.6 Sol. The model ships with a 1-million-token context window, 128k max output, and a new effort setting that lets developers trade capability for token cost per request.

For architects, Opus 5's value proposition collapses the rationing layer: instead of routing hard problems to Fable and keeping cheaper models for volume work, teams can now leave Opus 5 switched on. Anthropic deliberately withheld cybersecurity capabilities to mitigate misuse risks, keeping Mythos 5 for that domain. The timing reflects Wall Street scrutiny as Anthropic moves toward its June IPO filing—pricing competitiveness matters now as much as frontier capability. The model is available on Claude.ai, Claude Code, Claude API, Amazon Bedrock, Google Vertex AI, and Microsoft Foundry.
