Apple launches iPhone leasing at $17.99/month via Klarna, replaces upgrade program as prices bite

Apple announced Apple Upgrade, a new leasing program in partnership with Klarna, offering iPhone leases starting at $17.99 per month for up to two years, with similar options for Apple Watch (12–24 months), Mac (24–36 months), and iPad (24–36 months). The move discontinues Apple's existing iPhone Upgrade Program and represents a strategic pivot to lower monthly payments as Apple faces global memory shortages driving up device costs by $100 to over $1,000 depending on the model.

Apple raised Mac and iPad prices in June citing the global memory and storage crunch. Analysts now expect iPhone price hikes this year as well, with Morgan Stanley estimating the iPhone 18 Pro may rise roughly $200 to preserve margins, while TechInsights' component teardown suggests memory and other cost increases could add as much as $300 to iPhone bill-of-materials. The leasing program masks upfront sticker shock by converting the purchase into smaller monthly payments and pushes customers toward more frequent upgrades, potentially shortening the average iPhone replacement cycle from its current nearly four-year stretch.

For architects tracking consumer hardware trends and supply constraints, the shift signals Apple's recognition that component inflation is structural and lasting; leasing softens the hit on consumer wallets while enabling Apple to maintain unit growth and shift revenue toward subscriptions and services. The program also positions Apple to compete more directly with telecom carriers' device financing offers.
