Atoms raises $1.7B Series from Andreessen Horowitz for physical AI robotics

Travis Kalanick's physical AI startup Atoms closed a $1.7 billion funding round led by Andreessen Horowitz, making it the largest startup investment of the week. The Los Angeles-based company builds autonomous systems for heavy industrial sectors—manufacturing, construction, mining—and frames the opportunity as a "coming industrial revolution" where major economic sectors get fully digitized.

Atoms is one of a wave of physical AI startups commanding venture scale. The week's top 10 rounds also included Meshy AI at $400 million (3D model generation), Etched at $300 million (inference chips, $10B valuation), and multiple defense and biotech plays, indicating hyperactive capital allocation across AI applications from robotics to silicon.

For architects: physical AI represents a distinct capex and inference load pattern—often on-premise or edge-deployed, with different cost models than cloud API endpoints. Atoms' raise signals VCs believe the margin story in autonomous systems is worth betting $1.7B now.
