Augustus closes $180M Series B at $1B valuation; OCC charter enables AI-native clearing bank
Augustus, building the Global Dollar Bank, raised $180 million in a Series B at a $1 billion valuation on July 21, bringing total funding to $210 million. Tiger Global led the round with participation from Hummingbird, QED, and founders of Nubank, Ramp, Circle, and Deel. The company received conditional approval for a U.S. national bank charter from the OCC in May 2026, making Augustus the eighth bank granted such approval since 2010.
Augustus operates an API-first platform that gives international fintechs and banks direct access to dollar accounts and payment rails via a federally chartered bank. The company supports operating and FBO accounts, named virtual accounts, and settlement over Swift, ACH, SEPA, and stablecoins. It is already processing billions for clients including Kraken and continues to invest in Marble, its proprietary core banking platform, which uses AI across the back office to enable 24/7/365 settlement and faster cycle times.
The thesis: correspondent banking is the legacy banking layer that fintechs have not yet disrupted, leaving global institutions with slow incumbent banks or middleware fintech providers. By combining cutting-edge technology with a real bank charter, Augustus aims to become the modern direct clearing platform for international financial institutions serving Latin America, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.
For architects evaluating fintech infrastructure and stablecoin settlement, Augustus signals a structural shift: the dollar clearing stack is moving from correspondent-banking intermediation to direct bank access via stablecoin rails and AI-optimized settlement. The OCC charter validates that regulatory pathways exist for technology-native banks. The $1B valuation and blue-chip founder backing (Nubank, Ramp, Circle, Deel) suggest investors see correspondent-banking disruption as the next uncontested frontier in fintech M&A scale.
