Chai Discovery closes $400M Series C at $3.8B; AI drug design moves to pharma production

Chai Discovery, an AI drug-design startup founded in 2024, closed a $400 million Series C led by Index Ventures at a $3.8 billion valuation on July 14, 2026. The round included Kleiner Perkins, Sequoia Capital, Dimension, and new investors Bain Capital Ventures, Battery Ventures, Baillie Gifford, BDT & MSD, and Sapphire Ventures, alongside existing backers OpenAI and Thrive Capital. The funding nearly triples the company's valuation from its December 2025 Series B of $130 million at $1.3 billion, bringing total raised to approximately $630 million.

Chai's generative AI models produce de novo molecular designs from scratch, optimizing antibodies and small molecules for drug discovery. The company's Chai-3 model is already deployed at commercial scale with Eli Lilly and Pfizer, moving the narrative from research prototype to production usage. Index Ventures partner Nina Achadjian noted the team has achieved "real-world deployment" at the world's largest pharma companies, not just proof-of-concept.

The speed of valuation escalation (3x in seven months) reflects investor conviction that AI-driven drug discovery is crossing the chasm from academic to production. The company is addressing one of pharma's highest-ROI problems: identifying and optimizing novel molecules faster than traditional screening and computational chemistry methods allow, particularly for hard-to-target proteins.

For architects: Chai represents a different class of AI deployment—vertical AI with material enterprise revenue, not a model or toolkit. The $3.8B valuation on $630M raised signals that pharma-scale workloads (binding affinity prediction, ADMET optimization, antibody design) are now pricing AI infrastructure as mission-critical CapEx.
