Cloudflare for Government achieved FedRAMP Class D (High) certification status, a major milestone announced August 10, according to the Cloudflare blog. FedRAMP High is the federal standard for systems handling the nation's most sensitive unclassified data—law enforcement, emergency services, financial systems, and national security information where a breach could be catastrophic. Cloudflare upgraded from FedRAMP Moderate (achieved in 2022), which manages less sensitive data such as park admission systems.
The architectural decision is novel: Cloudflare runs one unified global network with the same software stack across all data centers, including for FedRAMP High. Using a Data Localization Suite, the company ensures all traffic inspection and processing for federal customers occurs exclusively within U.S. data centers, while federal agencies get the same cutting-edge features as commercial customers—Zero Trust security, DDoS protection, and new developer features—without lag. Most government cloud providers historically built isolated, pared-down versions; Cloudflare rejected that model on day one.
For defense and federal IT, this signals innovation velocity and feature parity at the compliance boundary. Cloudflare also announced it is using the same FedRAMP High systems as the foundation for U.S. Department of Defense Impact Level 4 (DoD IL4) authorization, which covers controlled, unclassified defense data. The DoD IL4 push means high-security workloads no longer constrain themselves to isolated, slower-moving government clouds.
