Five DeepMind Researchers Exit Alphabet to Anthropic and OpenAI in Single Week

In a cluster spanning June 18–24, 2026, five senior AI researchers departed Google DeepMind and Gemini teams for competitors: Noam Shazeer (Gemini co-lead, Transformer co-author) joined OpenAI; John Jumper (Nobel laureate for AlphaFold2, nine years at DeepMind) joined Anthropic; Jonas Adler (AI coding researcher) and Alexander Pritzel (pretraining specialist) both moved to Anthropic; and Arthur Conmy (Gemini 2.5 contributor, mechanistic interpretability) joined Anthropic. The cluster triggered Alphabet's steepest single-day stock decline in over a year, with shares falling roughly 7% on June 22 and losing ~$270 billion in market value across two sessions.

The departures expose specific capability gaps: Adler's exit removes coding expertise; Pritzel's departure removes pretraining knowledge, the phase determining a model's capability ceiling. Shazeer's move to OpenAI came shortly after Google reassigned compute resources from his project to a London-based team. Structural drivers include Anthropic's pre-IPO equity (valued at $965 billion following a $65 billion fundraise on June 1) and concerns about Google's compute allocation, hierarchy, and decision velocity. Jumper's departure highlights the gravitational pull of Nobel Prize-level researchers on their team members.

For the frontier AI race, these exits reinforce investor perception that Anthropic and OpenAI are closer to AGI than Google. Alphabet's retention strategy faces scrutiny: the company paid $2.7 billion for Shazeer two years ago; he stayed less than two years. Each departure to a rival directly strengthens competitors in what is effectively a zero-sum talent competition. Watch for further announcements in July as competing startups approach IPO readiness and pre-IPO equity accelerates toward liquidity events.
