Global silicon wafer shipments rise 7.4% YoY in Q2 2026; AI demand outpaces consumer weakness

Worldwide silicon wafer shipments increased 7.4% year-over-year to 3,573 million square inches (MSI) in Q2 2026, according to SEMI's Silicon Manufacturers Group (SMG), compared to 3,327 MSI in Q2 2025. Quarter-over-quarter, shipments rose 9.1% from Q1 2026's 3,275 MSI. Growth was driven by strong and sustained AI-related demand across advanced logic, memory, power devices, photonics, and other markets, with industrial and automotive sectors showing signs of recovery.

Silicon wafers serve as the fundamental substrate material for semiconductor fabrication and are produced in diameters up to 300 mm. The Q2 2026 data indicates device manufacturers are investing heavily in capacity expansion to support AI infrastructure buildout. However, memory price pressures are contributing to constrained demand in personal computing and smartphone segments. SEMI chairman Ginji Yada noted that "silicon wafer demand growth is expected to continue," signaling confidence in sustained supply-chain expansion through the remainder of 2026.

For practitioners, the 7.4% YoY growth and 9.1% sequential QoQ expansion signals robust underlying demand for semiconductor manufacturing capacity beyond just leading-edge GPU nodes. The rebound in industrial and automotive, combined with AI-driven demand across memory and power devices, suggests the industry's foundry and fab capacity utilization is not yet at saturation. However, memory pricing pressures and consumer weakness remain headwinds. Architects should monitor Q3 2026 wafer shipment trends to assess whether AI infrastructure demand can sustain growth or whether margin compression in memory will start to constrain capex cycles.
