Google DeepMind Invests $75M in A24; Embeds AI Researchers in Film Production
Google DeepMind announced a $75 million investment in A24 as part of a first-of-its-kind multiyear research partnership. Unlike typical studio-vendor deals, the arrangement gives DeepMind researchers direct access to A24's active filmmaking process across multiple projects, with A24 and its filmmakers retaining full creative control. The partnership does not give Google access to A24's film library or data.
The central technology is Veo 3.1, DeepMind's video generation model capable of producing 4K clips from text or image prompts with synchronized native audio and character consistency. The model currently caps at eight-second clips; a key research goal is extending that capability toward feature-length narrative filmmaking. The first AI tool in development is an AI-assisted storyboard generator, positioning workflow enhancement over wholesale content generation.
DeepMind has already partnered with individual filmmakers—Darren Aronofsky's production company Primordial Soup used Veo for AI-assisted shorts—and embedded researchers in gaming (Fenris Creations' EVE Online in May 2026). The A24 partnership extends that embed-and-iterate model to a full studio ecosystem. A24 Labs, led by Scott Belsky (formerly Adobe), is developing these tools in parallel with DeepMind.
For teams: the model signals how AI tooling for creative industries will evolve: not through generative content, but through workflow integration where creators use AI as augmentation rather than replacement. The storyboard-first approach and A24's public commitment to creative control address industry skepticism (Scorsese approved AI storyboards; Kane Parsons, A24's breakout director, has called generative AI "creative rot"). This partnership is a research play, not a content deal, and it matters as a proof point that AI labs are willing to embed inside studios to validate their tools before deploying at scale.
