Google DeepMind invests $75M in A24; embeds researchers in film productions for Veo tool feedback

Google DeepMind announced a $75 million investment in indie film studio A24 (announced June 22, 2026, per WSJ) as part of a multi-year, non-exclusive research partnership focused on developing AI filmmaking tools. Rather than acquiring A24's content library or data, DeepMind will embed researchers directly into A24's active productions to build and test AI-powered workflows—initially targeting pre-production work like AI-assisted storyboarding and shot planning. A24 Labs, led by former Adobe exec Scott Belsky, will retain full creative control and can work with other AI vendors; DeepMind can partner with other studios.

The deal signals Google's pivot from generic video-generation models toward production-embedded AI. DeepMind already collaborated with individual filmmaker Darren Aronofsky on Veo (AI video generation); this is the first full-studio partnership. A24 has greenlit critically praised films like "Marty Supreme" and "Backrooms"; having Veo baked into production workflows gives DeepMind real-world product feedback at scale while positioning Google as the artist-friendly alternative to catch-all generative models. Belsky emphasized the tools would "preserve creative control and support risk-taking" rather than wholesale content generation.

For architects: this is Google's play to own the 'AI tools for professionals' category in entertainment, mirroring Adobe's Firefly success in design. The $75M is 2% of A24's last $3.5B valuation—meaningful research access, not a control stake. Watch for DeepMind to funnel production insights back into Veo and eventually expand the pattern to other professional creative workflows (design, music, code). The partnership also hedges geopolitical risk by partnering with a creatively respected, independent studio rather than attempting direct deals with major studios tied to legacy studio systems.
