Greg Brockman consolidates OpenAI product power as Fidji Simo steps down

Fidji Simo, OpenAI's product and business chief, stepped down on July 10, 2026, citing chronic illness (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, diagnosed in 2019). She took medical leave in April and transitioned to part-time advisor status. Greg Brockman, OpenAI's co-founder and president, formally assumed full responsibility for product, ChatGPT business, go-to-market, enterprise teams, and compute initiatives.

Brockman reports directly to CEO Sam Altman and now manages OpenAI's most important revenue-generating units. The company does not plan to hire a replacement for Simo. Brockman and Altman have been close allies since co-founding OpenAI in 2015; when Altman was briefly ousted in 2023, Brockman quit in solidarity. Both also testified in May 2026 in Musk's lawsuit against OpenAI, which the company ultimately won.

The consolidation occurs as OpenAI prepares for what is expected to be a historic IPO, with the company confidentially filing its prospectus in June 2026 but reportedly delaying the debut until 2027. Brockman faces pressure to drive revenue and justify OpenAI's $852 billion valuation against stiffening competition from Anthropic, Google, and cheaper open-weight models. ChatGPT's market share fell below 50% for the first time in March 2026.
