Intel Foundry Q2: $5.8B revenue, external customer mix still 5% of total

Intel Foundry reported Q2 2026 revenue of $5.8 billion, up 32% year-over-year from $4.4 billion, with operating loss narrowing from -$3.2 billion to -$2.1 billion. Operating margin improved to -36.2% from -71.7%, driven by better yields, shorter cycle times, and increased fab scale. However, only $293 million of Foundry's $5.8 billion revenue came from external customers—roughly 5%—with Intel's own chip manufacturing driving the bulk of the segment's recovery.

The heavy reliance on internal business highlights Intel's foundry challenge: it can improve manufacturing efficiency for its own design needs, but lacks material third-party customers. Intel's Fortinet deal (security processor SP6 on Intel 4) marks the first named external win, though it combines custom-ASIC design services with foundry services—a hybrid model distinct from pure-play wafer sales. Intel targets Intel 18A-P for risk production and commits to 14A HVM in 2028, but has not announced major external commitments for leading-edge nodes.

For architects, Intel's slow external ramp matters. As Samsung and SK lock up multi-billion-dollar HBM and foundry commitments with Nvidia and Broadcom, Intel's custom-silicon path (targeting Broadcom, Marvell, systems companies in networking and automotive) appears more realistic than direct TSMC competition. The company's 'purpose-built silicon' business approaches $2B annual run rate and targets $4B, suggesting Intel is repositioning as a hybrid custom-chip + foundry player rather than pure foundry.
