Intel Stock Down 27% from June Peak; Supply Constraints Offer Pricing Power

Intel shares have fallen more than 27% from their June 22 record high of nearly $141, despite fundamental strength in CPU demand driven by the shift from AI training to inference. The sell-off reflects sector-wide concerns that hyperscalers may not sustain aggressive AI infrastructure spending, not a breakdown in Intel's business. The stock is up 280% year-to-date to its June peak before the pullback.

Wall Street wants proof Intel can ramp supply to meet CPU demand. Q1 revenue beat guidance by $1.4 billion, but CFO David Zinser said it would have been "meaningfully higher" without supply constraints. The company is investing $5.7 billion in its Leixlip, Ireland facility to increase Xeon-brand server CPU production. Intel also announced its first foundry customer win under new CEO Lip-Bu Tan: cybersecurity firm Fortinet signed to produce next-generation chips, joining prior wins with Apple, MediaTek, and Terafab.

Supply constraints are actually working in Intel's favor on pricing—with demand exceeding supply, the company can prioritize higher-value server CPUs and gain pricing power. The question is whether Intel's yields can approach TSMC's level; analysts say parity isn't necessary, just closing the gap. For architects, Intel's vertical integration, Ireland ramp, and supply advantage signal a non-TSMC path for custom silicon, though execution risk remains.
