Klarna's PriceRunner wins $1.97B antitrust verdict against Google in Swedish court

Sweden's Patent and Market Court awarded Klarna's PriceRunner unit $1.97 billion in antitrust damages against Google on June 26. The court found that Google systematically demoted independent price-comparison services in search results while favoring its own Google Shopping product, conduct that caused sustained commercial damage to PriceRunner over more than a decade and inflated costs for consumers.

The damages award compensates lost revenue from Google's anticompetitive search placement. PriceRunner had originally sought $2 billion when filing suit in 2022 but later recalculated damages to $8.3 billion based on extended losses; the court's $1.97B award falls between but is nonetheless one of the largest private antitrust recoveries. The ruling aligns with a 2017 European Commission decision finding Google abused dominance in shopping search, upheld by the EU Court of Justice in 2024.

Google is expected to appeal, and any payout to Klarna will be reduced by sharing agreements with PriceRunner's former shareholders and litigation funders, plus applicable taxes. Despite the cap, the verdict signals courts are willing to impose eight-figure remedies for search manipulation—a signal to other big tech defendants and enforcers.

For builders: antitrust liability in search ranking and service preference remains material. Klarna acquired PriceRunner in 2022 to drive high-intent commerce traffic; the award now funds content discovery and price-comparison verticals across 13 markets with 100M+ products indexed. The win also validates Klarna's AI-powered Shopping Search in ChatGPT, launched as a test of agentic commerce arbitrage.
