Kraken, Coinbase, Circle expand AI agent crypto infrastructure; stablecoins poised as agent payment rails

Crypto platforms are pivoting from consumer adoption around price speculation to infrastructure for AI agents, betting that autonomous systems will be the first users who naturally need programmable money and always-on payment rails. Kraken announced a rebuilt app enabling users to delegate portfolio monitoring and execution to AI agents; Coinbase launched a new Agents tool allowing models like ChatGPT and Claude to execute trades using natural language; Circle expanded its Arc blockchain (designed for agentic contracts) as infrastructure for agent-to-agent settlement.

The industry's thesis: unlike humans (who resist adopting crypto for payments), AI agents are built to operate online 24/7 without banking intermediaries, making digital wallets, programmable smart contracts, and stablecoins a technical requirement rather than a behavioral shift. Stablecoins—especially USDC (Circle) and others maintaining fixed value—are moving to the center of this narrative, positioned as the settlement layer for agent-to-agent commerce and machine-to-machine transactions that bypass traditional banking.

Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire argues that conventional banking systems are poorly suited to real-time agent commerce: "The reason why this is becoming a crypto story is not that the primary thing exchanged is crypto. It's that stablecoins and smart contracts allow AI agents to send payments and settle transactions automatically, without requiring human oversight." Circle is also marketing Arc as an infrastructure platform for banks wanting to issue their own tokenized deposits while using USDC as the interoperable rail.

For practitioners: crypto's shift from "is Bitcoin money?" to "how do agents pay each other" reframes stablecoins as commoditized infrastructure rather than speculative assets. The move signals maturation: crypto exchanges are adding equities, commodities, and lending alongside crypto, while major labs (OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta) now have governance frameworks for agent autonomy. Whether this drives genuine adoption hinges on whether agent-to-agent transaction volume outpaces crypto's persistent bear-market headwinds and the regulatory clarity around agent liability and fund custody.
