Lenovo doubles Whitsett NC AI server facility to 890K sq ft; targets 1,400 nodes/day capacity

Lenovo expanded its North Carolina manufacturing facility in Whitsett from ~445,000 sq ft to 890,000 sq ft, doubling footprint with a capital investment spanning infrastructure, staffing, and power delivery. The facility now supports 400 line workers with capacity to scale to 1,000, and can produce 1,400 server nodes per day across 28 assembly stations (one server every 60 seconds).

The expansion targets the AI infrastructure buildout: kitting operations process 150,000+ parts daily across 10 lines and produce 200 racks per week with capacity to double to 400. Testing includes 10 thermally controlled pods (16 test racks each) and 30 Liebert direct liquid cooling units (expandable to 50), each rated to 300 kW. Lenovo is already receiving Vera Rubin (next-generation NVIDIA accelerator) hardware by end of August for qualification. The facility handles 20 MW of power from Duke Energy.

Why this matters: the facility opened from empty warehouse to full production in just nine months, built on Lenovo's 20-year relationships with North Carolina tech talent, universities (NC State, Duke, UNC, Wake Forest), and supply chain partners. As Ashley Gorakhpurwalla (Lenovo EVP for Infrastructure Solutions) noted, AI is moving from 'hype cycle' into 'hero cycle,' and customers are demanding U.S.-native infrastructure.

For architects building AI systems, Lenovo's pivot signals that server manufacturing capacity is becoming a competitive advantage and a localization play. With hyperscalers spending $650B+ annually on infrastructure, domestic fab capacity at scale—9th month ramp to 1,400 nodes/day—reduces lead times and supply risk for enterprises sourcing AI compute. Vera Rubin qualification by Q3 is a signal that Lenovo is tracking bleeding-edge accelerator demand.
