MGX closes $49B Abu Dhabi AI fund, largest sovereign investment in sector
Abu Dhabi's sovereign wealth fund MGX announced Wednesday it has closed a $49 billion investment fund for AI companies, exceeding its $45 billion initial target. The fund is one of the largest ever raised purely for artificial intelligence, backed by institutional and private investors from the Gulf, North America, Asia and Europe. MGX has already deployed capital across 14 companies, including major positions in OpenAI, Anthropic, and xAI.
The fund reflects the brutal economics of frontier AI. OpenAI alone spent about $34 billion last year on compute, and training a leading model plus building the chips and data centers to support it now costs tens of billions of dollars. Developers need capital pools at unprecedented scale to pursue next-generation models and infrastructure. MGX has co-led Anthropic's recent $65 billion Series H raise and co-led OpenAI's $122 billion raise in March, positioning itself as structural investor in frontier AI financing.
MGX is deploying across the full AI stack—semiconductors, data center infrastructure, and AI-enabling platforms. In June, the company said it would expand an AI campus in France with Bpifrance and Mistral. The fund also participated in the $40 billion Aligned Data Centers acquisition alongside Microsoft, BlackRock, and NVIDIA, cementing Abu Dhabi's role as not just a capital provider but an infrastructure builder for the AI era. For architects: this signals capital availability for large-scale AI compute projects and confirms that state-backed sovereign funds are co-leading the infrastructure race alongside BigTech.
