Microchip to acquire edge AI chipmaker Hailo for edge AI portfolio

Microchip Technology has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Hailo, an Israeli provider of edge AI processors and advanced vision processing solutions, with the deal expected to close by the end of September 2026. The acquisition terms were not disclosed, but Microchip said the transaction is not expected to have a material impact on its financial results—a signal that the deal is relatively modest in scale despite expanding Microchip's AI capabilities.

Hailo brings a mature product portfolio including the Hailo-8, Hailo-10, and Hailo-15 processors, serving more than 100 current customers across robotics, industrial automation, drones, and smart cameras. The company has built an established developer community of over 10,000 users, with strong Raspberry Pi ecosystem integration that has driven adoption among hobbyist and professional developers. Hailo's technology supports CNNs, transformers, and LLM/VLM workloads, plus image signal processing, video encoding, and AI video stream processing.

For Microchip, the acquisition fills a gap in its edge AI acceleration portfolio, complementing its existing embedded processors, FPGAs, analog, and power management offerings. Edge AI—processing AI workloads directly on devices rather than cloud centers—is one of the fastest-growing semiconductor segments, reducing latency and bandwidth requirements for robotics, industrial automation, and vision applications. The move positions Microchip to offer complete intelligent edge systems.
