Microsoft Fixes Windows Update GPU Driver Downgrades with Multi-ID System

Microsoft is rolling out a fix to prevent Windows Update from automatically downgrading GPU drivers to older, stable versions—a persistent pain point for AI and gaming workloads requiring latest NVIDIA/AMD drivers. The new system uses multiple device identifiers to better match driver versions to hardware.

The change addresses friction in enterprise ML environments where automatic driver downgrades break CUDA/ROCm stability. Enterprises have historically disabled Windows Update or manually pinned drivers to avoid this; the fix aims to restore automation while preserving version control.
