Microsoft Surface Laptop Ultra runs Nvidia RTX Spark N1X: 20 Arm cores, 6,144 Blackwell GPU cores, 128GB unified LPDDR5X

Microsoft announced the Surface Laptop Ultra at Computex 2026, marking the first commercial product to ship with NVIDIA's RTX Spark N1X chip. The device packs a Blackwell GPU with 6,144 CUDA cores (claiming ~RTX 5070 performance), 20 Arm CPU cores (10 Cortex-X925 + 10 Cortex-A725), and up to 128GB of unified LPDDR5X RAM with NVLink-C2C interconnect between CPU and GPU. Microsoft claims 1 petaflop of AI compute and the ability to run 120-billion-parameter models locally. The 15-inch mini-LED PixelSense Ultra display reaches 2,000 nits peak HDR brightness. The device ships in 2026.

This marks the first time NVIDIA silicon powers a Windows PC as the primary processor, ending Intel and AMD's 40+ year x86 duopoly on the platform. Microsoft built the device in deep partnership with NVIDIA, with custom software tuning: Windows scheduler optimization, Power and Thermal Framework rework, Prism emulation tuned for the N1X microarchitecture, and gaming partnerships with Riot Games and KRAFTON (Valorant, League of Legends, PUBG now running natively on Windows on Arm via anti-cheat improvements). The device weighs under 4.5 lbs with dual-fan cooling and runs less than 80W sustained.

For architects and developers, the Surface Laptop Ultra represents a structural shift: local, high-performance inference on thin-and-light devices eliminates cloud round-trips for AI workloads. The N1X competes directly with Qualcomm's Snapdragon X2 Elite Extreme, but with significantly more GPU horsepower (6,144 cores vs. X2's discrete-equivalent capability). With multiple OEMs launching N1X devices (ASUS ProArt P16/P14, Dell XPS 16, HP OmniBook, Lenovo Yoga Pro 9n, MSI Prestige N16), Windows on Arm becomes the primary platform for on-device AI development and inference. Expect pricing to premium-tier (128GB RAM, NVIDIA partnership), but the category signals that datacenter GPU incumbents are now competing in mobile AI.
