Musk's Terafab: SpaceX/Tesla commit $16.8B first phase for 100M sq ft vertically integrated fab in Texas

SpaceX and Tesla formally announced that Terafab, their joint advanced semiconductor fabrication project, will be built in Grimes County, Texas, approximately 45 miles northwest of Houston. The companies committed an initial $16.8 billion for the first phase, with potential future phases pushing total investment to $119 billion. The completed facility will span more than 100 million square feet of manufacturing space—larger than the Pentagon, Apple Park, the Mall of America, and Giga Texas combined.

Unlike conventional semiconductor fabs that separate logic and memory production across different facilities, Terafab will consolidate manufacturing, packaging, and testing of advanced logic and memory under a single roof. This vertical integration is intended to shorten production cycles and accelerate time-to-yield through faster iterative improvements. The facility will employ at least 3,000 workers from Grimes and neighboring Brazos counties.

SpaceX and Tesla state their combined demand for semiconductors exceeds 1 terawatt of compute per year, far exceeding current global supply. For architects: this represents the ultimate vertically integrated supply-chain retreat—internalizing fab capacity as a strategic asset when public foundry schedules and allocation cannot match the volume demands of large-scale robotics, autonomous vehicles, and orbital data centers. The scale (10x Giga Texas by footprint, 50x the Pentagon) signals betting tens of billions on the assumption that custom silicon velocity matters more than foundry partnerships.
