NIST joins Genesis Mission with AI centers for manufacturing drones, critical infrastructure cybersecurity

The U.S. Department of Commerce's NIST and Department of Energy Office of Science signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on the Genesis Mission, a White House-led whole-of-government initiative to double U.S. science and engineering productivity within a decade by unlocking AI-enabled discovery and innovation. NIST will contribute via two centers executed in partnership with MITRE Corporation: the AI Economic Security Center for U.S. Manufacturing Productivity and the AI Economic Security Center to Secure U.S. Critical Infrastructure.

The manufacturing center focuses on autonomous agents and AI-driven robotics to increase production capacity tenfold within two years, launching first with civilian and military drone production. The infrastructure center accelerates AI-based agents for ultra-high-speed cyberthreat detection and remediation across power grids, telecom networks, water treatment, financial platforms and healthcare systems. Both are designed as two-year sprints to rapidly produce deployable commercial solutions while yielding generalizable strategies for replication across other domains.

For infrastructure builders: the Genesis Mission formalizes government coordination on AI as strategic capability, not just research. NIST's focus on autonomous manufacturing and cyber-defense agents signals federal priority for operational readiness—not demos. Teams shipping production agents should track Genesis Mission opportunities as federal demand signals and match their capabilities to priority sectors (drone manufacturing, grid resilience, telecom network security).
