Nscale acquires Ray platform steward Anyscale for $1.65B; closes loop on full-stack AI cloud
Nscale, the London-based AI infrastructure provider, announced July 30 a definitive agreement to acquire Anyscale, the commercial platform company behind Ray, the open-source framework for scaling distributed AI workloads. The deal is valued at $1.65 billion (per Bloomberg) and includes approximately 200 Anyscale employees across the U.S., Europe, and India. Expected to close in H2 2026, the transaction represents a strategic vertical integration play as Nscale seeks to own every layer: power, data centers, compute, and now workload orchestration software.
The combination pairs Nscale's GPU fleet, data center infrastructure, and power provisioning with Anyscale's Ray-based software platform for training, fine-tuning, inference, reinforcement learning, and agent deployment at scale. Ray was donated to the PyTorch Foundation in October 2025 and remains open-source and community-governed; Nscale will join the foundation to reinforce commitment to Ray's long-term stewardship. Anyscale will continue operating under its own brand and serve its existing customer base (Coinbase, Bedrock Robotics, Runway), with customers remaining free to choose infrastructure. Over time, Anyscale customers gain the option to run on Nscale's full-stack platform.
For enterprise AI teams and infrastructure practitioners, this deal signals a consolidation trend: infrastructure providers are racing to own software layers that determine performance, efficiency, and lock-in. Similar moves are underway across the sector (Qualcomm's acquisition of compiler startup Modular in July 2026, AMD/Xilinx vertical integration, etc.). The open-source positioning of Ray is notable—unlike proprietary software, it provides competitive leverage without vendor lock-in concerns. For Nscale investors, the acquisition extends TAM by adding software monetization ($1.65B values Anyscale at roughly 1.2x its reported prior valuation of $1.38B from 2022).
