NSF launches $100M AI Infrastructure Hubs program; NVIDIA, AMD, Intel pledge support

The U.S. National Science Foundation announced the State and Regional Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure Hubs program, a $100 million initiative to expand access to AI compute, data, and expertise for academic research and workforce development across the country. The program will establish up to 10 regional consortia, with one award per state or region, pooling resources from research institutions, state and local governments, and private-sector partners. NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, and Dell Technologies have pledged to contribute training resources, applied learning content, and technical guidance to participating hubs; the Secunda Innovation Fund and Hangar also signed on. The NSF's investment focuses on coordination, infrastructure workforce development, and faculty training, while industry partners supply hardware and operations.

Regional hubs will operate with flexible approaches—on-premises infrastructure, cloud computing, or hybrid—allowing each consortium to design around local research priorities and economic needs. The program is modeled on a 2020 NVIDIA-funded partnership with the University of Florida (UF), which has since grown to 300+ AI-focused faculty and pulled in $511 million in AI research awards across all 16 colleges. Hubs will integrate with the NSF's National AI Research Resource (NAIRR) pilot and connect with the TechAccess: AI-Ready America workforce development initiative, which aims to build a national AI-ready workforce through education pathways, certificates, and credentials.

For research teams and institutions, the hubs offer direct access to frontier compute infrastructure without requiring individual million-dollar investments. The program addresses a critical gap: academic researchers have been priced out of large-scale model development and testing as costs have grown beyond university lab budgets. A hub-based approach allows researchers to pool capacity and expertise, supporting discovery in materials science, biomedical engineering, quantum computing, and climate modeling. Watch for the first round of awards and hub announcements, which will reveal regional compute architectures and which universities/consortia set early precedent.
