NVIDIA commits $300M ($50M/year) to KAIST agentic AI lab; first joint lab with Korean university

NVIDIA and Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) announced a $300 million joint AI research lab at KAIST's Kim Jaechul Graduate School of AI in Seoul, dedicated to advancing agentic AI models and systems optimized for South Korea. The collaboration includes $50 million per year in compute contributions across an initial five-year period, funding for at least 10 KAIST researchers annually with NVIDIA internships, and full-time hiring of top Korean researchers. This marks the first joint AI research lab between a Korean university and any global technology company.

The lab prioritizes developing models optimized for the Korean language and Korea-specific use cases, using NVIDIA Nemotron open models and local NVIDIA Cloud Partner infrastructure. The goal is to build a pipeline from academic discovery to enterprise and national AI deployments. The collaboration is positioned within a broader NVIDIA effort in South Korea: Samsung is building an AI factory with 50,000+ GPUs for AI acceleration; SK Group is deploying 50,000+ GPUs for semiconductor R&D and cloud infrastructure; Hyundai Motor Group is adopting 50,000 Blackwell GPUs for autonomous driving and smart factory AI; and SK Telecom plans a gigawatt-scale AI Cloud using NVIDIA DSX, coming online in 2027.

The Korean government has also invested $50,000+ NVIDIA GPUs through the National AI Computing Center and cloud providers (NHN Cloud, Kakao, NAVER Cloud). NVIDIA ecosystem expansion in Korea now includes collaborations with LG AI Research (physical AI and healthcare models like EXAONE Path), NAVER (full-stack AI factory with 55+ megawatt data center scaling to gigawatt), and others in the Nemotron Coalition for open model development.

For researchers and builders: the KAIST lab signals NVIDIA's strategy to deepen regional AI R&D partnerships and create feedstock for Korea's industrial AI (semiconductors, robots, autonomous vehicles, physical AI). The $300M commitment is NVIDIA's largest direct research investment outside its own labs, reflecting the geopolitical and economic importance of Korean tech ecosystems in the AI supply chain.
