NVIDIA invests $5B in Safe Superintelligence, gets access to Vera Rubin compute

NVIDIA committed $5 billion in equity to Safe Superintelligence Inc. (SSI), the research lab founded by OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever, marking one of the chipmaker's largest strategic bets on a frontier AI company. The deal grants SSI priority access to NVIDIA's next-generation Vera Rubin GPU platform, expected to increase the startup's compute resources by an order of magnitude over 12 months.

SSI has raised $7 billion total and carries a $32 billion post-money valuation, yet has released no products or published research in its two years of operation. The lab's singular focus is building safe superintelligence without the commercial detours Sutskever argues distracted OpenAI. NVIDIA gained rare access to SSI's closely guarded research before committing the investment, signaling confidence in the startup's technical direction.

For architects shipping in production, this deal underscores how GPU capital is flowing not just to model providers and inference platforms, but directly into safety-focused research infrastructure. It also crystallizes NVIDIA's shift from pure chip supplier to strategic investor in the companies that will consume its fastest hardware at scale.
