NVIDIA RTX Spark N1X prototype leaks real-world benchmarks; Microsoft Surface Laptop Ultra ships fall 2026
A prototype Microsoft Surface Laptop Ultra equipped with NVIDIA's RTX Spark N1X chip has surfaced in real-world testing, revealing concrete performance data ahead of fall 2026 retail launch. The N1X, codenamed in development but now branded RTX Spark Superchip, pairs a 20-core ARM Grace CPU (10 Cortex-X925 + 10 Cortex-A725) with a Blackwell GPU carrying 6,144 CUDA cores and up to 128GB of unified LPDDR5X memory. The prototype scored 5,771 in Cinebench 2026 multi-core and 540 single-core, showing performance competitive with AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 and Intel Core Ultra X9 388H, though the system ran on pre-release drivers and firmware from November 2025 and July 2026.
NVIDIA is shipping the N1X across a family of three configurations — flagship N1X with full CPU/GPU, and two lower-tier N1 variants with reduced cores and power — in fall 2026 from ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Microsoft Surface, and MSI, with Acer and GIGABYTE to follow. Analyst pricing estimates from Morgan Stanley put the N1X flagships near US$2,899 and N1 models at US$1,799, though NVIDIA has not published official prices. The chip claims 1 petaflop of FP4 AI performance and can run 120-billion-parameter LLMs locally with up to 1M token context, targeting AI developers, creators editing 12K video, and gamers at 1440p/100+ fps with DLSS 4.5.
The prototype testing also exposed real constraints: driver instability, erratic power management, gaming stutters, and crashes in CUDA tests suggest NVIDIA still faces optimization work ahead of retail. The tested machine showed Windows 11 on ARM running via Microsoft's x86-to-ARM Prism emulator achieving roughly 80% of native performance on legacy apps. This marks the first major ARM challenge to Intel/AMD's 40-year Windows-on-x86 dominance, but viability depends on driver maturity and software ecosystem readiness by fall launch.
