Ode Poetry launches voice AI persona of anthologist William Sieghart to recommend poems for emotional wellbeing
Ode, built by the UK social enterprise Ode Poetry CIC (co-founded by poet and anthologist William Sieghart and Amelia Richards in 2022), is a voice-based AI that holds a short conversation about a user's emotional state or a chosen theme — then selects and reads an appropriate poem aloud. The experience is anchored by a virtual persona of Sieghart himself, whose curatorial sensibility informed selections from the canon, including Keats's Endymion and Gerard Manley Hopkins's The Windhover.
The product is designed with a deliberate privacy posture: no conversational data is captured or retained, only limited anonymised device telemetry. It is optimised for Chromium-based browsers (Chrome, Edge) and explicitly targets a calm, unhurried interaction style — users are encouraged to pause after a poem lands before responding. Clinical backing comes from NHS Greater Manchester Clinical Director for Mental Health Professor Sandeep Ranote, who is quoted on the site.
The launch has drawn attention from Wharton professor Ethan Mollick, who called it a 'beautiful, humane demonstration of AI' after testing conversations on vastness and landscapes of memory. For practitioners, Ode is a compact case study in persona-grounded voice AI applied to mental health: a real human expert's taste encoded into a retrieval-and-recitation loop, delivered with a privacy-first, no-logging architecture targeted at consumer wellbeing rather than enterprise scale.
