OpenAI Codex hits 5M weekly users, passes Anthropic's Claude Code as scaling tool

<cite index="4-1">OpenAI confirmed on June 2, 2026, that Codex had reached over 5 million weekly users, up from 4 million on April 21 and just 600,000 at the start of the year. Around 20% of those users are now knowledge workers rather than developers</cite>. <cite index="6-1">The tool had roughly 1.6 million weekly active users in early March 2026, so it roughly tripled again over the following three months</cite>, driven by <cite index="6-3">the launch of GPT-5.3-Codex, which drove a three-fold jump in active users and a five-fold increase in token volume each week</cite>.
