OpenAI July ARR exceeds entire Q2 on GPT-5.6, ChatGPT Work momentum
OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar told employees on Wednesday that the company's annualized recurring revenue in July exceeded all of Q2 combined. The acceleration follows releases of the GPT-5.6 model series, the enterprise agent ChatGPT Work, and growing traction with Codex, its AI coding tool. Friar and board chair Bret Taylor attributed the surge to enterprise adoption and developer demand, signaling the company is reversing a slowdown that had held ARR near $25 billion from February through spring 2026.
Third-party tracking shows OpenAI reaching approximately $41 billion ARR by July 2026, though with mounting competition from Anthropic (which some sources now claim has surpassed OpenAI's revenue run rate) and cheaper open-weight models from China, including Moonshot AI's recently announced Kimi K3. Enterprise now accounts for more than 40% of revenue and is on track to reach parity with consumer by year-end. Despite the revenue growth, OpenAI remains unprofitable, with projected 2026 losses between $14 billion and $33 billion depending on accounting method.
The acceleration matters for OpenAI's roadmap to profitability and its planned 2027 IPO at a target $1 trillion valuation. The company is racing to cover massive infrastructure commitments: $600 billion in total compute spend through 2030, including a potential $250 billion backstop from Nvidia for Ohio data center leases. ChatGPT now exceeds 900 million weekly active users and 50 million paid subscribers, giving OpenAI pricing power at scale, but the implied multiples rest entirely on revenue growth sustaining in the face of both higher inference costs and Anthropic's rapid gain.
