OpenAI launches ChatGPT Work agent, merges Codex and ChatGPT desktop app

OpenAI unveiled ChatGPT Work on July 9, 2026—a new agentic agent that combines ChatGPT with Codex to automate multi-step workflows for knowledge workers. Powered by GPT-5.6 Sol, ChatGPT Work handles complex tasks including creating documents, presentations, spreadsheets, and web applications. The agent executes independently across web, mobile, and desktop, with scheduling capabilities that allow background task execution. It is designed to compete directly with Anthropic's Claude Cowork, launched in January 2026.

ChatGPT Work bundles multiple structural moves: OpenAI is consolidating its Codex desktop app and ChatGPT desktop app into one unified ChatGPT desktop application for Mac and Windows. The standalone Atlas browser is being sunset, with its agentic-browsing learnings absorbed into ChatGPT itself. The agent includes control surfaces like Plan mode (approval before work begins), configurable check-ins, and granular action approvals. ChatGPT Work rolls out today for Pro, Enterprise, and Edu users, with Plus and Business users gaining access within days. OpenAI positioned the offering as cheaper and more broadly available than Anthropic's alternative.

For production-shipping architects, ChatGPT Work signals OpenAI's push into autonomous enterprise agents that can persist on long-running projects for hours while staying within user-defined guardrails.
