OpenAI's Fidji Simo steps down as product chief, transitions to part-time advisor
Fidji Simo, OpenAI's chief of product and business, announced Thursday that she is stepping down from her full-time role to focus on recovery from a severe exacerbation of her chronic illness (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, or POTS). Simo, who joined OpenAI in May 2025 from Instacart (where she served as CEO and took the company public), took medical leave in April. OpenAI President Greg Brockman assumed product responsibilities during her absence and will continue in that expanded capacity.
Simo's departure marks a significant transition in OpenAI's executive structure at a critical moment: the company filed confidentially for an IPO last month and is reportedly delaying any public-market debut until at least 2027. In a statement, Simo acknowledged the difficulty of prioritizing health in demanding leadership roles, writing that she had been 'spending countless hours in doctors' offices, dealing with symptoms, treatments, insurance, uncertainty.' She will transition into a part-time advisor role at OpenAI.
Simo's move underscores ongoing challenges in high-performance tech leadership amid chronic health conditions. For OpenAI watchers, the appointment of Brockman as permanent product lead signals a consolidation of strategy under existing leadership during the IPO preparation phase. Architects evaluating OpenAI as a platform partner should note this structural change in the product roadmap's executive sponsorship.
