Prefect acquires Dagster; rivals consolidate into one orchestration platform

Prefect has agreed to acquire Dagster Labs, uniting two of the most widely adopted modern data and AI workflow orchestrators. The transaction, announced July 13, brings together the two leading successors to Apache Airflow, creating a combined suite that serves thousands of engineering teams running production data pipelines, ML operations, and AI agent infrastructure. Both Prefect and Dagster will continue as independently supported products under their existing names, open-source licenses, and commercial offerings (Prefect Cloud and Dagster+), with many Dagster team members joining Prefect.

The strategic rationale hinges on complementary strengths: Dagster defines outcomes through asset-based orchestration and data lineage, while Prefect handles execution and durable workflow reliability. A third pillar—Prefect's FastMCP (Model Context Protocol implementation)—governs how AI agents access tools and data. FastMCP has hit 92 million downloads in the past month and 26,000 GitHub stars. The combined entity positions itself as the orchestration foundation for the shift from static data pipelines to autonomous, agentic workflows where systems need to define goals, execute reliably, and control what agents can touch.

For architects building AI-driven systems, this consolidation signals category maturity: after years of fragmented tooling (Airflow, Prefect, Dagster, Luigi), the market is converging around platforms that span data definition, runtime execution, and agent governance. The move implies both companies see that orchestration alone is insufficient—the real value is in binding outcomes, execution, and access control into a single control plane. Financial terms were not disclosed.
