Samsung breaks ground Taylor Fab 2 by year-end 2026; mass production 2nm targets 2030

Samsung announced during its Q2 2026 earnings call that it will break ground on Taylor Fab 2, a second foundry fabrication facility at its Taylor, Texas campus, before the end of 2026. The facility is targeting mass production in 2030 with a focus on 2-nanometer process technology. The move underscores Samsung's commitment to onshoring advanced chip manufacturing for U.S. customers and competing with TSMC for foundry share, driven by demand from Tesla (AI5/AI6), Broadcom, and other hyperscalers.

Samsung's Taylor Fab 1 is on track to begin operations in 2026 or early 2027, with 2nm capacity ramping through 2027. The company also confirmed that 2nm orders in 2026 will more than double compared to 2025, and customers have already begun product design phase. Samsung also revealed plans to secure additional capacity for its emerging 1.4-nanometer process based on customer interest and demand signals. The company noted that it is reviewing the groundbreaking of Taylor Fab 2 while simultaneously evaluating 1.4nm space—signaling that supply constraints remain tighter than customer appetite.

For foundry customers, Samsung's second Texas fab represents real second-source optionality: Fab 1 capacity (estimated at 50K+ wafers/month at 2nm) will be insufficient for the demand wave from AI infrastructure buildout. The 2030 production target for Fab 2 is aggressive but reflects geopolitical resiliency concerns—Taiwan concentration risk pushes customers to lock onshore capacity now. For Samsung's earnings trajectory, Taylor ramp-up is a critical turnaround lever: foundry losses have narrowed as 2nm orders and pricing power accelerate.
