Samsung, Supermicro build 50MW floating AI data centers powered by fuel cells
Samsung Heavy Industries and Greek shipping partner Supermicro are co-developing 50MW-class floating AI data centers that run on solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) burning liquefied natural gas—a shift toward offshore, self-powered infrastructure for frontier-model training and inference.
The offshore location and fuel-cell power aim to sidestep grid constraints and reduce carbon footprint while delivering power density at scale. For enterprises planning multi-year GPU capacity expansions, this signals emerging alternatives to land-bound hyperscaler networks and grid-dependent builds.
