Sila raises $300M for silicon anode expansion; pivots beyond EV to AI, defense, robotics

Sila, an advanced battery technology company, secured $300 million in a private equity round led by Atreides Management and Sutter Hill Ventures. The round also included 8VC, Bessemer Venture Partners, Matrix Partners, and funds advised by T. Rowe Price. The fresh capital will help Sila make enough of its silicon-carbon anode material to power more than 100,000 EVs. The Moses Lake, Washington plant spans 160 acres, began operations in fall 2025 with Phase 1 capacity of 2 gigawatt-hours, and Phase 2 is designed to reach 250 gigawatt-hours over five years, which would make it the largest anode production facility in the world if achieved.

Sila's expansion arrives as electric vehicle demand in the U.S. has softened following the Trump administration's efforts to hamstring the propulsion technology; while U.S. EV sales are down this year relative to 2025, global sales are up 27% year-over-year according to Benchmark Minerals Intelligence. Sila is pivoting its pitch to AI hardware, robotics, aerospace, and defense customers who care more about energy density than EV adoption rates; the easy EV story has weakened, but the better battery story now runs through AI infrastructure, defense, robotics, space, and devices needing more energy without more weight. The company's silicon-carbon material, branded Titan Silicon, offers ~20% higher energy density than graphite anodes.

China controls over 90% of anode material processing and more than 80% of global battery cell production, leaving American manufacturers of critical technologies from drones to sensors exposed to single points of failure. For practitioners, Sila signals a domestic-first strategy on critical battery materials supply chains, tapping into infrastructure concerns around AI compute, military systems, and robotics. Sila has shipped its battery material in one consumer product (the WHOOP fitness band), so the commercial traction remains early despite the funding scale. The $300M round reflects investor confidence in energy-density performance over EV-specific applications, but execution risk remains high given the 250 GWh five-year target and lack of major automaker commitments to date.
