Situational Awareness invests $500M total in Source Foundry, EUV chipmaking startup

Leopold Aschenbrenner's hedge fund Situational Awareness has invested a total of $500 million in Source Foundry, a stealth startup developing extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography technology to challenge ASML's dominance in advanced chip manufacturing. The fund made a $100 million initial investment in July, followed by a $400 million follow-on completed on Tuesday, August 5, 2026—just three days after Situational Awareness narrowly avoided collapse when margin calls from Wall Street lenders triggered a 78% asset decline in July. Sequoia Capital is also backing Source Foundry.

Source Foundry aims to build next-generation EUV lithography tools, the critical machines required to manufacture cutting-edge AI chips at sub-7nm process nodes. ASML currently holds near-total market dominance in EUV systems, which cost $150–200 million each and are essential for anyone fabricating advanced semiconductors. The Source Foundry bet is a long-cycle, high-conviction play: developing and bringing a new EUV system to market typically requires 7–10 years and billions in R&D, and competing against ASML's entrenched ecosystem of process recipes, customer relationships, and IP is a multi-decade undertaking.

The timing signals Aschenbrenner's return to conviction investing after his fund's near-death experience: Situational Awareness liquidated most public AI infrastructure bets (semiconductor, power, data center stocks) to meet margin calls, then immediately redeployed capital into a private company working on semiconductor manufacturing infrastructure. This represents a bet that AI capex buildout will outpace current chip capacity, making foundry and lithography tools scarce and economically valuable over the next decade.

For architects and infrastructure investors, the Source Foundry play is significant as a signal of long-cycle AI capex conviction. If EUV alternatives materialize, they could disrupt ASML's pricing power and accelerate fab capacity expansion. However, the technical and IP hurdles are enormous—no new entrant has successfully commercialized EUV systems in 15+ years—and ROI timelines extend well past 2030. This is venture capital operating at maximum risk horizon and long-bet conviction.
