Tesla Q2 free cash flow turns negative $1.1B as capex explodes 142% funding Robotaxi, Optimus, chip fab

Tesla reported Q2 2026 revenue of $28.24 billion (up 26% YoY), beating consensus by 10.5%, but net income and EPS disappointed. Operating cash flow surged 85% to $4.7 billion, yet capital expenditures more than doubled to $5.79 billion, resulting in negative free cash flow of $1.09 billion. The company expects full-year capex to exceed $25 billion and is arranging up to $30 billion in new debt facilities to accelerate investments across multiple bets: Robotaxi, Optimus humanoid robots, in-house chip fabrication (Terafab), and AI compute infrastructure.

Tesla explicitly framed the quarter as entry into its "largest and most exciting period of investment." The company decommissioned Model S and X lines at Fremont Factory to make room for Optimus first-generation production. Cybercab is in limited production; Robotaxi is now live in seven metro areas. Operating margin compressed to 1.4% from 4.1% YoY due to a 47% surge in operating expenses. Automotive gross margin (excluding credits) fell to 16.3% from 19.2% in Q1, signaling price pressure and high R&D burn.

Management acknowledged execution risk and regulatory uncertainty. Musk cautioned that Optimus is "very complex" and that even one autonomous-vehicle incident would "halt rollout." Robotaxi paid-mileage growth has flattened sequentially (approx. 900k miles per quarter), raising questions about adoption velocity despite expansion into Florida. The company maintains $43.5 billion in cash, but negative FCF in subsequent quarters combined with elevated capex could constrain flexibility if revenue growth slows.

For architects: Tesla is burning cash to fund parallel moonshots across automotive, robotics, and semiconductors. Analysts debate whether management is willing to subordinate near-term profitability credibly or is overcommitting. The $30B debt facility and willingness to accept "lower capital efficiency" suggest confidence, but negative FCF in a high-growth, positive-cash-flow business historically signals mid-cycle inflection risk. Watch Q3 for trends in Robotaxi utilization and Optimus unit production.
