US Genesis Mission deploys $5B+ for 278 AI-for-science projects across 50 states
The White House and Department of Energy announced on July 22 that over $5 billion in federal commitments are being deployed across 278 research projects selected from more than 5,000 applications—the largest response to any DOE funding call in its history. The Genesis Mission, launched via executive order in November 2025, is a whole-of-government initiative spanning 15+ federal agencies, designed to use AI to accelerate scientific discovery. The 278 selected projects span all 50 states and involve 342 participating institutions: 142 universities, 157 companies, 16 DOE/NNSA national labs, 13 nonprofits, and 14 other bodies.
The largest single award is $60 million over three years for the Prometheus nuclear energy project, aimed at using AI to design, license, manufacture, and operate nuclear reactors faster and cheaper. Additional major commitments include NSF's $380 million for 20 AI-enabled autonomous laboratory nodes, plus over $80 million for data infrastructure and up to $100 million for AI-ready datasets. Participants gain access to the Genesis Mission Platform, which includes AI agent frameworks, advanced models, software from industry partners, and high-performance compute from national labs including NVIDIA's Equinox (10,000 Blackwell GPUs at Argonne) and AMD/HPE's Lux cluster (comparable size at Oak Ridge).
This announcement coincides with a renewed push to reform U.S. science policy. Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Michael Kratsios released a report titled "Science: A New Golden Age," calling for federal research funding to shift toward AI-enabled systems and individual scientists rather than universities. Agencies with $3B+ in research authority must submit implementation plans within 90 days.
For architects: the $5B commitment represents a substantial but critics argue insufficient response to China's reported $295B five-year AI plan. Token costs in China are reportedly under 10% of U.S. rates, and China claims leadership in physical AI/robotics. The Genesis Mission Platform offers researchers access to world-class HPC and AI model tokens; practitioners should monitor integration of open-source models (Nemotron, etc.) and whether the shared infrastructure achieves the claimed goal of doubling U.S. R&D output.
