Wall Street raises bar on AI capex: Alphabet falls 7% despite strong growth, CFO warning incoming

Alphabet reported better-than-expected revenue and earnings Wednesday with Google Cloud growing 82% year-over-year, yet shares fell 7% Thursday as investors focused on the company raising capital expenditure guidance. Alphabet now expects capex of $195–$205 billion this year and signaled further increases in 2027. With free cash flow turning negative, Wall Street is signaling skepticism that hyperscalers can justify hundreds of billions in AI infrastructure spending without demonstrable financial returns.

The sell-off reflects a market inflection: after months of rewarding AI infrastructure buildout, investors are now demanding concrete evidence of payoff. Alphabet was the fourth-worst performer in Alphabet-focused funds (down 7.8% for the week), while Intel—which raised guidance on 59% data center revenue growth—opened higher but reversed lower, closing down nearly 8% Thursday. Intel's failure to announce a major foundry customer beyond Fortinet (security processor) signaled disappointment despite operational improvements. Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft report next week; capex guidance will be the focal point.

For architects, this marks a material shift in how the market prices AI infrastructure at scale. Builders relying on continued hyperscaler capex expansion and data center availability should monitor earnings calls closely. The threshold for 'acceptable' AI spending has raised: companies must articulate not just infrastructure scale but nearterm monetization paths. NVIDIA and memory vendors (SK Hynix, Micron) face indirect pressure if hyperscalers moderate expansion in response to investor skepticism.
