Amazon Leo deploys 390+ satellites; ready to launch initial commercial service by end of 2026
Amazon said Thursday it has deployed enough satellites to launch its Leo commercial internet-from-space service later in 2026. The latest mission—a ULA Atlas V rocket carrying 29 satellites—brought Amazon's total constellation to more than 390 satellites, which the company says is sufficient for 'continuous service across initial latitudes.' Chris Weber, VP of Amazon Leo business, stated the milestone enables initial commercial service, with future missions adding coverage and capacity. Coverage will likely be limited to certain geographies initially, with plans to expand based on additional satellite deployments.
Amazon's Leo constellation is designed to compete with SpaceX's Starlink, which launched 15 years earlier and now has around 10,000 satellites serving 10+ million subscribers. Amazon aims to build a final constellation of 3,236 satellites and has secured 100+ launches across ULA, Arianespace, SpaceX, and Blue Origin, though the Blue Origin New Glenn suffered a launch-pad failure in May. The FCC waived Amazon's interim July 2026 deployment deadline in June, requiring the full constellation to deploy by July 2029, effectively giving Amazon more flexibility to compress the timeline using heavier-lift vehicles like Vulcan (expected Q3 2026).
For infrastructure and satellite-focused architects, Leo's near-term launch signals a second major broadband-from-orbit player entering production, potentially increasing pricing competition with Starlink and accelerating capacity deployment. Early customers include Delta Airlines (500 aircraft by 2028), JetBlue, AT&T, Vodafone, and NASA. The venture validates satellite internet's role in AI infrastructure (data center backhaul, edge compute) and enterprise connectivity, particularly in regions where terrestrial broadband is constrained.
