Amazon Zoox unveils redesigned robotaxi, planning paid service launch in late 2026
Amazon's Zoox unveiled a redesigned robotaxi (its "next evolution" from the toaster-shaped prototype), featuring higher-quality touchscreens, improved comfort (enhanced seats, headrests), and redesigned "bidirectional reflectors" to help riders and external parties distinguish the vehicle's front and rear. The updated design is branded the "production intent vehicle," with fleet integration planned for late 2026 as Zoox prepares to launch paid service and wider geographic expansion.
Zoox currently operates free rides in Las Vegas and San Francisco, has on-demand service for select users in Miami and Austin, and is testing across six other US cities. It has served 500K+ riders since launching in Las Vegas in September 2025, lagging Alphabet's Waymo (500K+ weekly paid rides across 10 cities). Zoox's main hurdle is NHTSA approval to operate up to 2,500 robotaxis for commercial purposes—a petition currently under review after public comment closed in April.
The company is scaling production at its San Francisco Bay Area manufacturing facility, which opened in June 2025 and aims to reach 10,000 vehicles/year at full capacity. Zoox struck a partnership with Uber in March to offer robotaxis through Uber's ride-hailing app in Las Vegas, extending reach beyond direct Zoox channels.
For infrastructure and ops architects, Zoox's shift from free to paid signals Amazon's confidence in fleet safety and operational readiness. The redesign prioritizes passenger UX (visibility, comfort) and external communication (reflector placement) ahead of commercial launch, reducing regulatory friction and fleet-management complexity as robo-taxi economics depend on high utilization and minimal downtime.
